Dear friend,
This month has been one of healing and recovery for Elias. I have been overwhelmed by the love and generosity shown by our friends and of course, the girls dote on him as much as I will allow it.
The older three were determined to hold a civil war party. This is the invite they asked me to send to the parents:
Summer, Boyd and Smith have read a few Civil War books lately and are pretty amped up on the idea of hosting a "Civil War Party". They would love to have Chessa, David & Alex join them.
They asked me to "email our friends' parents what we will do so they won't be scared about a war party and make sure you tell them we are on the Union side. We do NOT like slavery."
Their activities include:
- Decorating cookies to look like flags and soldiers
- Making marshmallow catapults
- Hard boiled egg battles
- A Clara Barton appreciation moment (3 minute video)
- Egg obstacle course (like Clara Barton getting medical supplies to the front lines)
- "Move the troops" (A game that involves moving M&Ms from one place to another by sucking them up with a straw)
Covid protocols:
- There will be six kids. I will ask them to wear masks when possible, but try to space them out as they eat cookies and play the game with the straw.
It was a hit!
A major highlight of the month was the Saturday the kids and I joined my parents and the Packers at Ed McNally's farm in New York for a day of maple tapping.
We learned a bit about life and death this month. Joy and Rose had a little butternut friend named "Squash Heart" that ended up as part of our dinner one night and there were more tears than I had expected. Additionally, Smith found a snail "Jackie" who became a well-loved member of the family until he/she died two weeks later. It was a tearful day in the house.
Rosie started preschool this month and Joy was excited to show her the ropes.
We had a lot of fun little moments at home this month. Joy led me through a photo shoot and made dinner for everyone night. Boyd and Smith spent most of the month on their heads but squeezed in time to make a little spa for Summer after a hard swim. Summer is now on swim team and is giving it her all three days a week. Rose continues to live life on the edge and tease us with potty training.
Smith has been determined to build "dinosaur feet" and with E's help and a few screws into the soles of old tennis shoes, Smith's dreams came true.
Even though he can't walk yet, I snatched Elias for a night away in the Hamptons and Montauk. It was gorgeous. I love him.
